Winter Driving Tips

What should I include in a winter driving kit? A well-stocked winter driving kit helps to handle any emergency. It should include:

  1. Properly fitting tire chains
  2. Bag of sand or salt (or kitty litter)
  3. Traction mats
  4. Snow shovel
  5. Snow brush
  6. Ice scraper
  7. Booster cables
  8. Warning devices such as flares or emergency lights
  9. Fuel line de-icer (methanol, also called methyl alcohol or methyl hydrate)
  10. Extra windshield wiper fluid appropriate for sub-freezing temperatures
  11. Roll of paper towels
  12. Flashlight and a portable flashing light (and extra batteries)
  13. Blanket
  14. Extra clothing, including hat and wind-proof pants, and warm footwear
  15. First aid kit
  16. Snack bars or other "emergency" food and water
  17. Matches and emergency candles - only use with a window opened to prevent build-up of carbon monoxide.
  18. Road maps.
  19. "Call Police" or other help signs or brightly coloured banners.
